GREAT FALLS, VA, September 04, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ira Silverman with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Silverman celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An award-winning journalist and former NBC investigative producer, Mr. Silverman worked at the NBC television bureaus in New York and Washington for nearly 30 years. Hired in 1967 as a producer and writer, he was later promoted to chief investigative producer. He retired in 1995. Mr. Silverman was a contributor to The New Yorker magazine from 1994¬2002. He was a consultant to NBC (1997-1998) and to PBS (1999, 2002).
During his long career in journalism, Mr. Silverman’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and tenacity for investigative reporting afforded him many noteworthy opportunities. He especially enjoyed working on stories involving uncovering corruption in various police departments. After the death of John Belushi in 1982 from a cocaine and heroin overdose, Mr. Silverman was assigned to investigate the drug culture in Hollywood film and television studios. His reports included an expose of extensive drug dealing in those studios. While writing for The New Yorker, Mr. Silverman authored an article “An American Terrorist,” in August of 2002, which was the story of Dawud Salahuddin, a 29-year old African-American convert to Islam who fled from the United States to Iran after assassinating a political opponent of the Ayatollah Khomeini regime in Iran.
Early in his career, Mr. Silverman co-authored a book with David Durk. Published by Harper & Row, “The Pleasant Avenue Connection” is set in New York in January of 1969 and is based on events which transpired during Mr. Durk’s career as a police detective. Mr. Silverman is still writing today, working on his memoir as well as a screenplay. In recent years he has become interested in how the brain stores and retrieves memory.
Mr. Silverman attended Columbia University, where he majored in American history and wrote for the student newspaper, The Columbia Daily Spectator. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. While at Columbia, Mr. Silverman was greatly influenced by Lawrence Chamberlain, his mentor and the dean of the college at the time.
Recognized for his outstanding contributions to journalism, Mr. Silverman won two Emmy Awards for News and Documentary in 1985 and 1987. He also received four National Headliner Awards between 1977 and 1987, Overseas Press Club of America Awards in 1987, 1990, and 1992, the George Polk Award from Long Island University in 1988, an Excellence in Television Award from Channels magazine in 1990, and the George Foster Peabody Award from the University of Georgia in 1991.
